Gallant
tune headed for big screen
Lennie
Gallant’s song Mademoiselle Voulez Vous Danser,
recorded by Jimmy Buffett, will appear in the
feature film Canvas.
The film, which stars Academy
Award-winner Marcia Gay Harden (Mystic River)
and Joe Pantoliano from The Sopranos, is a poignant story about
a father and son who cope with a mother's mental illness by building
a sailboat together for her.
Buffett is one of the more
than 30 artists worldwide who have recorded songs by Gallant,
who has released seven albums, including most recently When
We Get There. The Prince Edward Island-raised songwriter,
now living in Halifax, was inducted into the Order of Canada for
his contribution to Canadian culture in 2004.
Gallant’s music has
appeared in other feature films, as well as in theatre productions,
documentaries and television series, including Dawson’s
Creek and Joan of Arcadia. He co-wrote the theme song for the
first World Acadian Congress, and for Pier 21, Canada’s
immigration gateway. He was also asked to write a song for Halifax’s
250th anniversary, which was then performed with a choir of 2,000
voices on one of the two bridges spanning the harbour.
Gallant has several
Juno nominations under his belt and will be performing at this
year’s JunoFest.
